From Rome to Florence

It's Tuesday morning and we'll be leaving Rome in the afternoon. But first we will be doing a tour of Vatican City. We walk to our tour bus and begin our short ride to the outer walls of Vatican City. Once there, we, and 30 or so of our tour mates, trail along behind our guide towards the entrance to the museum. Now we stand and wait (and wait and wait...), but we finally pass through security and get inside to start out tour.  There are LOTS of other tour groups so it's VERY crowded, but the sculptures, and paintings and tapestry are very impressive.

We get to the entrance of the Sistine chapel, but before entering we are told "NO Talking & NO photos.  We packed about a million people (slight exaggeration ;) ) into a room about the size of a basketball court.  And, of course, there were some people that refused to be quiet. So not the most peaceful chapel that I've ever been in, but the paintings were truly beautiful.   Side note:  It took  Michaelangelo four years to paint the ceiling and he worked 7 days a week, from sun up to sun down. Also he painted while standing on scaffolding, on his tiptoes!!

Our next stop on the tour was St. Peter's Basilica.  Also EXTREMELY crowded but very impressive. Side note:  what looks like beautiful paintings in the church are actually mosaics, made up of thousands of tiny colorful tiles; each mosaic taking many years to complete.

We finished the tour, headed back to our b&b to pick up our luggage,  and walked to the train station to catch the train to Florence.  We hopped on the fast train and got to Florence in about 1 1/2 hours. We walked out of  the train station and immediately bought a map of Florence, quickly realizing that we had no idea where our hotel was located (!) and, of course, this map did not have our hotel listed.  We started to walk, which was silly, since we had no idea where we were going:)  Then, technology  to the rescue....we managed to figure out, after several attempts, how to use our phone to call the hotel and, the concierge,  who thankfully spoke English, gave us directions.

Ancient Roma

We started the day with breakfast, which we ate on a rooftop garden that was part of our b&b. And then we left for our "hop on hop off" bus tour of the city. First stop...the Coliseum.  After seeing a VERY long line just to buy tickets to go inside,we signed up for walking tour that included both the Coliseum and Palatine Hill. This put us ahead of those waiting in line:) The coliseum was very impressive and the tour of the ruins surrounding Palatine Hill was also cool. However, the sun was HOT so we left to get back on the bus and didn't get off again until we decided to eat.  Then we went back to our room to relax and wait for it to cool off a bit.  In the late afternoon we walked to St Maria Maggiore, one of many famous churches, and after that just strolled through the streets of Rome. We ended our day with dinner at one of the many many many restaurants that line the streets.

Better late than never!

Hi everyone! We've been having a few technical difficulties getting our little blog going, but I think we're finally here.

We left Indy around noon on Saturday, arriving at Philadelphia around 2:30pm.  After a three hour layover, we left Philly and were on our way to Rome. We landed around 8:15am Sunday morning and waited at the airport until our shuttle took us to our b&b. As you can see in the picture below our b&b was rather nondescript and our driver drove right by and dropped us off about two blocks beyond the entrance :) We walked back to the b&b only to discover their check-in and our room was on the 5th floor. No elevator in sight!!! So we carried our luggage up the stairs and (thank goodness) they let us check into our room right away.

By Sunday night we were beat, as we needed to stay up to reset our internal clocks. That didn't stop us joining a nice young Irish couple at a pub next to the hotel and watching a bit of premier league football, Manchester United versus Liverpool, though we left before the end and wandered a bit, including a stop at Trevi fountain. Rick Steves must have visited at 5 am to be able to throw a coin in the fountain, we couldn't get anywhere close, it was packed with tourists and cheap souvenir hawkers. We did have a nice dinner at a pizzeria not too far away, then crashed back at the room to finish our day.
